Week of October 21

October 21st, 2013 Comments off

The blog for Mr. Hamlin’s classes has moved to the following address:

https://sites.google.com/a/ismanila.org/socialstudies8mrhamlin/home

At this site, you will find everything related to Grade 8 Social Studies for both students and parents.

The weekly preview for social studies will still be posted on this page of the blog (see below) – and also on the new webpage, but please disregard the other links found on this blog site, as they are now outdated.

This week, in our effort to learn more about how states transform themselves, we will focus on the current conflict in Syria.  Through their understanding of UN principles, students understand how sovereignty prevents outside groups (UN or other states) from forcing change upon Syria, and how if Syria is going to transform, that transformation much take place within the country.

Last week, students watched a brief video and read an article giving some background information.  This week, students will become “experts” on one particular part of the Syrian situation.  Within groups, they will create a brief presentation designed to teach their fellow classmates about their particular area of expertise.  This will be done in Block 3 this week.

Also during Block 3, students will take the Middle East Map Quiz.

This week marks the end of Quarter 1.  As such, students will have an important test this week covering everything they have learned thus far about international systems – especially the League of Nations and United Nations.  There will be a review day for the test during Block 1 this week, and the test itself will be taken during Block 2.  Prior to taking the test, students will have to create a new Google Doc – named SS Written Work – (name) and share it with me.  This will need to be completed for homework before Block 2.

The third block of the week will be dedicated to starting our look at the Middle East region.  Our theme for Quarter Two will be “transformation,” and we will focus on recent transformations taking place in the Middle East.  This unit will start with students making a map of the Middle East so that they are familiar with the geography and countries of the region.

Assignments for this Week
  • Two Read & Respond entries due by Thursday at 8 PM.  One must now be a Middle East related article
  • Study for Test this week
