At this site, you will find everything related to Grade 8 Social Studies for both students and parents.

This week, we will begin with some notes and activities related to the creation of the United Nations.  Students should have read pages 4-5 in their UN packet last week, which deals with our current topic.
 
During the second block of the week, we will hold our first Structured Academic Controversy (SAC).  During this, students will debate the fairness and equity of “veto power” as it exists within the UN Security Council.
 
Students will also be taking the MAP test for reading at some point in Social Studies class this week.
 
Assignments for this Week
  • Two Read & Respond entries due by Thursday at 8 PM.
  • Reading Packet – UN: Challenges & Change – Read p. 6/7 with interactive reading. (due by start of second block of the week)

Due to the Caliraya CWW trip that occurs at the end of this week, this week classes will only meet twice (or only once in the case of G Block).
 
This week will be spent participating in several activities related to the League of Nations, about which the students learned last week.  These activities will focus on some of the key terminology and also get students to use their critical thinking and debate skills to debates some of the concepts related to the League of Nations.
 
During the second block of the week, students will be introduced to the formation of the United Nations and its fundamental principles.

Reading Packet – UN: Challenges & Change – Read p. 4/5 with interactive reading  (including the first couple sentences at the top of page 6) – This is HOMEWORK for G Block.  Other blocks will do this in class.

This week in social studies, we will conclude our look at World War I, and will begin examining how the events of this war led the international community to begin thinking about the need for an international system to oversee the challenges faced.
 
This will lead us into this week’s main topic – which is the creation of the League of Nations.  Students will learn about how the League was created, its goals, strengths and weaknesses, and how it ultimately failed.
 
Students will receive a reading packet this week called  The United Nations:  Challenges and Change.  This packet will be used the rest of this semester, so they should really take care of this packet.  Students will be given a homework reading assignment during the first block of this week.
 
Assignments for this Week
Read & Respond – 2 entries due by Thursday at 8 PM.
Reading Packet – UN:Challenges and Change – read pages 2/3 with interactive reading:
        Selective Highlighting / Recognizing Unknown Words / one comment / one curiosity
        question / one of each of the Formal Questions (no answers to questions needed)
