April 19th, 2013 Comments off

This week in COW, we will conclude our look at the Economy compass point.  This will conclude with a case study related to Metro Manila in which we examine some of the economic hardships faced by some residents of the city in which we live.

Towards the end of the week, and using our case study as a springboard, we will transition to an examination of the “Society” compass point.

COW – Week of April 15

April 12th, 2013 Comments off

This week in Changing Our World, we will continue our look at the Economy compass point.

Last week, students were introduced to GDP and GDP per capita and learned about what they represent.  We also learned how these two indicators can show significantly different things about a country.

This week, we will continue looking at how the subject of “economy” plays a significant role in many global issues.  Students will examine the role that they play in this, and will also participate in a simulation designed to illustrate issues involving inequity of income.

This marks our first full week of work on the Advocating for Change project.  At this point, students know their topic and have developed a focused research question on which they will begin to research this week.  They have also learned how to properly evaluate websites for credibility purposes.

This week, students will be taught how to use in-text citations in their writing, and will conduct research into the Global Overview and Home Country Outlook sections of their paper.  This research will continue throughout the week, with these sections of the research paper being written next week in English class.
