SS8 – Week of October 22

October 19th, 2012 Comments off

Due to Friday marking the start of fall break along with the shortened schedule for Filipiniana at ISM on Thursday, the week in social studies will be a bit abbreviated.  Also, D&E blocks will only meet twice this week, whereas A&B blocks will meet three times (though shortened classes on Thursday).

To begin the week, all classes will reconvene in their MUN conference groups to debate the final conference resolution, which contains clauses approved last week.  Delegations will now be voting for or against the resolution as a whole – basically, should the UN go ahead and start implementing this plan or not.  Students will also complete a reflection activity focusing on what they have learned about international systems of governance, the United Nations, and the country they have represented.

Following this, we will transition into our next theme – transformation – by taking a quick look at the current situation in Syria.  The situation in Syria will be used as a model to learn about the stages of revolution, which will become an important component of this class for the remainder of first semester.

COW – Week of October 22

October 19th, 2012 Comments off

This week in COW will be a short week due to the beginning of fall break on Friday and the shortened class periods due to Filipiniana on Thursday.  However, there are some very important tasks that students need to complete before the break.

During the first block of the week, students will create a presentation which focuses on a particular case study related to discrimination by disability.  They will present their case study to the students at their “home” table, who have focused on a different case study.

The second (shortened) block of the week will be dedicated to the Issue Report.  The research for this Issue Report must be finished by the end of this class block and will be graded shortly thereafter.  In order to be complete, topic groups must have developed three research questions and each student must have completed 15 notecards in NoodleTools (direct quote with paraphrasing)

Assignments Due This Week

15 Notecards due for each student in NoodleTools

October 12th, 2012 Comments off

This week in Changing Our World, we will shift our focus to an examination of the problem of Discrimination by Disability.  Since several students will have attended the Saturday Service to CCV (our partner site that focuses on this topic), they will have first-hand experiences to draw upon as we look at this issue.

The third block of the week will again be reserved for student groups to work on their Issue Report research.  Important aspects of this research are due by the end of class on Friday, and are listed below.

Due this Week

Friday (end of class)each student must have 10 complete (with paraphrase) notecards in the group NoodleTools project.  Also, groups must have decided on their three research questions.

This week in COW, students will spend the entire week focusing on their Issue Report.  This is a project that ties in with their February CWW site and is one part of the Performance Task for COW.

The Issue Report is the research based portion of the Performance Task, and students will spend this week getting to know their issue through the development of research questions and finding the answers to these questions.  Since this project is completed in accordance with CWW sites, some students will be working individually on this project while others are working in small groups.

Assignments for This Week

Thursday – by the end of class, student groups must have 3 research questions developed

Friday – by the end of class, students must EACH have 10 notecards in NoodleTools
