This week in COW, we will only meet twice due to Parent / Teacher conferences being held on Tuesday. During our first block on Monday, we will continue looking at problems involving lack of access to education. Specifically, we will start to learn about issues that girls face regarding equal access to education in many places in the world. Students will examine an case study about girls’ education in a particular country, will develop a presentation with a partner, and will present this information to the people at their table.
Our last block of the week will be dedicated to the continuing Action Project. All student groups must have an Action Project approved by me by the end of this class period. Groups will then have four weeks to enact this plan that they develop.

Future’s Assignment – due Monday night (assigned last week)
This week officially marks the final week of the 3rd quarter in social studies. We extended the quarter by one week in order to complete the political party campaigns that students have developed.
Being that this is the final week of the quarter, there are several important events. First, many of the political party ministers will be speaking during the first block of the week and will be offering their solutions to numerous Philippine problem areas. This presentation is a significant part of the Performance Task for third quarter.
During the second block of the week, Mr. Willey and I will combine our social studies classes, and the Party Leaders of each political party will speak to the combined classes. We will then hold a primary vote, to determine which party from each block will be represented in the “All 8th Grade” general election. This election will be held on Friday afternoon and the Party Leaders representing the parties that were victorious in the primary elections will speak to the entire 8th grade.
One other assignment for this week will involve students writing a justification for their vote. After voting in the primary elections, students will be required to write a brief essay detailing the reasoning behind their vote. This will be done with the assistance of notes that they will be required to take during the Party Leader speeches.
Best of luck to all the political parties on the elections coming up this week!

This week in Changing Our World, we will begin examining the lack of quality education received by some children around the world. Students will be introduced to the concepts of education – something they generally take for granted – and the impacts that education (or lack of education) can have on people around the world.
During the second class of the week, students will be view classrooms around the world and will draw inferences based on their observations. The idea that education is not equal around the world will become readily apparent. Students will also be introduced (through video) to an African girl and will learn about the difficulties she faces in getting an education.
During the third block of the week, students will work in their CWW groups to begin developing their Action Project. Students will have approximately five school weeks to develop and carry out the action that they have developed.
Assigned Monday – due next Monday (March 19) – Future’s Assignment (this assignment will require some parental assistance)
This week in COW, we will wrap up our examination of the topic of Child Abuse. The week will begin with a visit by Mr. St. Laurent, who will discuss the Stairway Foundation – a Philippine organization that deals with abused street children. This foundation also provides the location for one of our CWW sites. Mr. St. Laurent will discuss the foundations goals and programs, and will also take the students through some animated videos that deal with the problems faced by children at Stairway.
During the last block of the week, students will be introduced to the action project. This is a very important project in which student groups will actually take action towards improving the global issue which they have researched and been directly involved with at their CWW sites.
This week in SS8, students will continue working with their political party groups on the 3rd quarter “Running for Political Office” performance task. Early in the week, students will conclude their research on their various investigated issues and will then learn about writing their political brief (which will also be delivered in spoken form).
